Lunch. This Vietnamese caramel sauce-with-meat concept is pure genius. I can’t believe I hadn’t been exposed to it before. I had the drumsticks leftover from yesterday’s dish, so I riffed on yesterday’s recipe, tweaking it with some garlic, onion, sesame oil, chili oil. Once again, fantastic.

Noodlepie’s blog put me on to Andrea Nguyen’s book ‘Into the Vietnamese Kitchen’. It’s an interesting read – her family fled from Vietnam in the tumultous 70’s, and this book is a collection of recipes her mom took with her. I love this dish. I’m not sure I will be able to adequately express my newfound love for this dish. … Read More
Busy Day
What’s with all these posts?!? I know. I’m going to blame it on the cool weather. After all that heat, which effectively sucked all inspiration and energy for mucking about in the kitchen, I’m making up for lost time. Last night I made my first salt cod. It was my last piece of fish from the waters near Sonora Island, … Read More
Banh Trang phoi suong
Finally. Banh Trang phoi suong. I figure if it’s Noodlepie’s favorite southern Vietnamese dish, I’ve got to give it a go. And I realized mid way through that I’ve eaten something very similar to this before. The difference, in my opinion, like in many cuisines, is in the details. The mix of fresh minty-citrusy-bitter herbs, many which I probably don’t … Read More
Binagoongang Baboy
I’m a travel research geek. And I’m currently planning a trip to South East Asia. Not going anytime soon, but that hasn’t stopped my geekness before. Thanks to some great blogs written by locals in Vietnam, like this one, there’s a very good chance we’ll be stopping in Vietnam. To eat. After lots of reading and drooling at photos, I … Read More
Culinary Accomplishment: Texas BBQ
A couple weeks ago I did a Carolina-style barbecue pork shoulder for the first time. Thanks again to Michael Ruhlman for writing my ‘Charcuterie’ bible. It was his recipe, and it was damn good. And by barbecue, I mean the south of the U.S. style barbecue. Not grilled at all. No gas. Smoked and cooked at low heat with moisture … Read More
Chinese Food?
We had the worst chinese food of our lives last night in chinatown. It was a horrible restaurant experience of epic proportions. We have a ‘usual’ place we enjoy for good chinese, to which I can compare the place we visited last night. The difference? Prawns the size of your thumb vs the size of a peanut. Fresh baby bok … Read More
Indian food
It is rare that a restaurant really impresses me, especially when I have pretty high expectations. Our first visit was prior to my wife’s pregnancy-related aversion to indian food. So I waited for months to go back. Months of anticipation, expecting great food. And it did not disappoint. If you’re into Indian, this place is wicked and is a buffet … Read More
Pho: Part II
I ate my vietnamese soup for breakfast, lunch, and supper today. No pictures, sorry. Good thing I made it, as I woke up with a sore throat and headache. Hence my lack of awesome story about my soup eating binge. Dang.
Pho: Part I
I have great respect for Vietnamese cuisine. For some reason, among the asian cuisines I’ve been exposed to, I’m drawn to it the most. Maybe I’m more ethnocentric than I think and it’s only because they were once colonized by the French, my European cuisine favorite. Or not. I’m a big fan of the clean, fresh, savoury, transparent, and crisp … Read More
