Highlights? 2005 Vina Chocalan Grand Reserva – tarry, cigar, rich, complex. One of the best pairings with food was a 2003 Chateau Bellevue la Foret from Fronton [oddball French appelation] – and it’s a steal at $14.99. This wine could command double the price were it in a more reputable appelation, I believe. I’ve never disagreed with a critic more than on the 2005 Artadi Vinas de Gain from Spain. Jay Miller of the Wine Advocate gave it 94. I say 84. Maybe less. The 2005 Chateau de Carles was instantly likable, and it really appealed to me, but I’m a sucker for right bank Bordeaux. Honestly, I thought IT was the 94 point wine…but I was wrong. Monsterously wrong, thanks to blind tasting. And lastly, the 2006 Falesco Sangiovese from Umbria was unique and memorable. It smelled of dust, stubble, fall, balsamic vinegar, with some nice fruits. Really odd, a 88 point wine, but really interesting.
Food pairing is going to be a major focus of the next 4 Wines nights, and I’m stoked. Next up: Pinot Noir paired with duck confit with mushroom sauce.
