2005 has been touted as a great vintage for Beaujolais, but I don’t know if I’m in that camp. Last night, some of my favorite wines [Fleurie, Julienas] seemed to almost be of a different style – much lighter and noteably more subtle. But I’m thinking, after tasting all the other 05 Crus, that this is likely vintage-related. Less ripeness, richness in the fruit in 04, which, in my opinion, lends to some delicacy and freshness. The 05s seemed to punch with size and be far richer. So if I had to choose, a week ago I would have said ‘no brainer – 2005’ based on what I’ve read. But based on my palate, I’ll be reaching for the 04s as long as I can.
