AJC – I’ve seen some on kijiji for $60 or so. Make sure you get the highest horsepower you can – will alleviate overheating. I’ve never had an issue, but know some of the lower power ones that have.
Bob – yes, real time. I’m getting pretty healthy fermentation with no added yeast this year – I’m impressed as I’ve always used Lalvin D47 for apple wines. They’ve been doing a light primary foam, but quickly go to a secondary state that I describe as pop-like. Can’t wait to bottle some cider!

Is that real time? When I’ve made adult beverages (mead), it’s never that active.
